Actions, activities and programs must be institutionalized by the leader to invest in those employees who may be there long after the leader moves on, up or out. The long-term sustainment of programs and projects after a leader leaves is the true mark of influence.
John M. Buckman III has served as fire chief with the German Township (Indiana) Volunteer Fire Department for 34 years. He served as president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and is the co-founder of the Volunteer and Combination Officers Section of the IAFC.
