What is the Fire Telling You?

Can you tell the difference between “a room and contents fire” and “a structure fire?” What does that difference mean? Does it change the strategic options open to the IC? I hope it does, because the difference between the two could be a matter of life and death for firefighters who might go interior for a fire that has been burning structural members. If it is a structure fire, how long has the structure been burning? What is the impact of the burning structure on the integrity of the structure? The difference between the two fire types is a critical decision making component in the IC’s determining of strategic choices. Those who serve in a position of command should become aware of what the fire is saying to you, and it is important to make an informed and appropriate decision that improves firefighter survival.
